Some people in the cafeteria at school. I'm quite sure that I made the guy sufficiently uncomfortable. Pretty good likeness though.
There are more sketches to post from the same sitting, but I will have to take the time to post them later, as my computer is currently taking a poo.

Old man Woodblock Print

In case anyone wonders what I've been up to at school lately. . .

Last week I made my very first woodblock prints!
The first image is the ink sketch that I based my print on, though personally I'm happier with my drawing abilities than my wood-carvings skills. It was incredibly tedious but oddly rewarding (It didn't help that my wood block was flawed - a fact that was pointed out after I had finished carving) and I would be very willing to try it again on my own time. Next up is colour prints on linoleum, so I'm super psyched about next class!
Erm - and, I scanned the test run print crookedly. Please ignore the paper dings as well. It wasn't a good copy!

Portrait of the Artist as a Young Squiggly Person

Sort of a fun exercise in class that I decided to *gasp!* FINISH!!! Distorted a photo using a grid. I'm sure you've heard of it.
The scanner couldn't quite get it right, and try as I might I couldn't Photoshop the evil out, so I photographed it - it may be a little shadowed, but the colour and contrast is nearly spot on.
Coloured Pencils (Prismacolour) on Mayfair. Speedball ink used, which I found smudged a bit with the pencils. Used a pen (2 different nibs) to lay down the linework. The bottom shows what it looked like before I coloured it (doi) and the reference photo - not sure what happened to my face but I quickly got over it and posted the damned thing anyways. The picture is from about grade 4 or 5 - you can imagine.
Used my colourless blender rather heavily in this one, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The background was a big of a pain in the ass to do - but I love the idea. I think if I were to do it again I would use a pen and coloured ink instead of pencil crayons. It was too much to keep the lead sharp and I found that line inconsistency was rampant. Maybe I'm just too lazy. *shrugs*

Daily Drawings

I'm starting to keep a daily sketch book and carrying it around with me. Today I did some contour drawings.
I don't imagine that anyone will be impressed with these - but they are great exercises. Each took anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to draw. I used a pigment liner - so. . . NO ERASING! All of my models were moving (especially Lady!). I think these sorts of things are really helping to a) build my confidence in the line I put down and b) train my eyes and hands to work together. I quite enjoy them and plan to do many more.

My very first attempt with oil pastels. I used kraft paper and an ancient set of pentels, and. . . I've to got to say I'm pleased. Not a bad first try. The reference photo is on the cover of an old book of mammals that I've been drawing from since I was a kid.
The lighting in this isn't great - plus it's slanted, I know. I'll be sure to take better pictures later - I can't blame the camera any more! I just bought a new Canon digital Rebel XTi. This poor carpenter has lovely tools.

Five minutes and ten minutes respectively. Jake playing Guitar Hero III - He was moving a bit, so it was harder to keep track of his proportions, but I'm very happy with the end result. I need to do more of this type of sketching - it's very rewarding! I'm finding myself paying a lot more attentions to proportions and detailing since my drawing fundamentals classes at school.

It's called Rapid Fire, more on account of it being friggin' hard to pop on out every day on my schedual. A nice little challenge though - and so far I'm enjoying it.

From this month's Draw Jam on DrawingBoard. Wasn't too keen on the look of the model, but thought I would give it a shot. The hair in the face was a bit of a pain in the ass - kind of wish I hadn't been so literal with it.

I am pretty happy with her hands - what I drew anyways. Slowly but surely I'll get this!

I've been accepted to school for the fall - I'll be attending for Art and Desing Fundamentals. Seeing as how I'll be super busy with work and school, I have decided to commit to my knitting for the summer and try and finish all that I can. I'm itching to draw again, but alas, everything I churn out is garbage.

I keep having troubles when I photograph it - being that it constantly looks bottom-heavy. I assure you it looks much creepier. . I mean better. . . in real life. Anyways, I bought a whole slew of canvases at Curry's yesterday, so expect more paintings!

Creepy Painting of John on Sofa - Unfinished

Very Spooky painting of the boy - Taken from a photo I took of him being silly on the sofa. Not yet finished, started last night. I'll post the finished result when it's all wrapped up. This is my first "proper" painting in probably about a year? Yeah, about a year plus.

I still need to work on his hair (not so much forehead) keep going with the hand and bump up the shading on his face. The outline of his face needs trimming on the left hand side, left a little extra to work the background on. Speaking of which, haven't totally decided on the background yet. It's couch, but I don't know to what level yet.

Lots of general tweaking to be done.

P.S. Thundercats makes awesome background noise for portrait painting. Make note.

Actually completed on Thursday, but I wans't able to get to a scanner before midnight.

I actually took my time today. Didn't dawdle, but didn't rush it. I'm really pleased with the way this came out. I enjoyed the hair, as I have never really done African-type hair. It was very satisfying, and I think I captured the light pretty well on it. I haven't finished her blouse yet, but I intend to.

I want to re-do this one. I was really pleased with the subject, but not so much with my execution. Didn't feel like doing hands or feet because I'm lazy like that. Hopefully my study on hands over the weekend will encourage me to attempt it again but proper.
My drafting table is not set up yet, so I got to lay a watercolour base while trying to fight away a kitten and two children, precariously balancing my brushes atop the kitchen table. It wasn't a really great environment to attempt wet-washes. It fell short.
The shadowy grey bits are where the paper buckled due to yet another indifference. I promise I'll try harder next time. . . ?

I really liked the look of this girl, thought she would translate well to extremes in colour. Anyways, happier with my original blue than the inked version, I think this deserves to be revisited. Intend to either colour-ink her or watercolour.
